Hillside Custom Home
A custom home built into the hillside, where stone, walnut, and deep green cabinetry hold their own against a very big view.
The project
How this home came together
A hillside site gives you drama for free, and the temptation is to answer it with more drama. We went the other way. The interior is grounded and tactile so the landscape stays the loudest thing in the room.
A full-height stone fireplace anchors the living space and sets the material direction for everything else: warm walnut cabinetry in the kitchen, a waterfall stone island, and darker, moodier finishes in the rooms that do not have the view to carry them. The powder room takes that idea furthest, wrapped in botanical wallpaper over deep painted wainscot.
Styling was planned alongside the architecture rather than added afterward. Arched display cabinets in the study and living areas were specified early so the shelves could be styled as part of the design, not decorated around later.
